Max Payne Review
System: PC
Players:

Game Type: 3rd Person Shooter

After
years of being hyped as the next big thing, Max Payne finally arrived and
delivered on the hype. But a year down the line, is it still any good?
Graphics: *****
Wow. The detail on the characters, like their facial expressions in particular, is amazing. You can even see the bullet cases fall to the ground! Amazing!
Music/ Sound Effects: ***
Music- what music? There are a couple of tunes in there, which fit in well, but nothing overly memorable. Sound effects are the standard shoot-em-up fare. Voice acting is surprisingly excellent- the Max Payne character in particular sounds really badass. Other enemies' quips wear a bit thin after a while- 'It's Payne!' is a good example, but they are still done well.
Gameplay:
*****
Without
Bullet Time, Max Payne is just another 3rd Person Shooter, except that it's nigh
impossible on harder difficulties. With Bullet Time, the game goes from merely
average to brilliant in a few (slowed down) seconds. This is taking gaming to a
whole new level, plus it looks so damn cool! This game is like an action movie
you play. That's basically it. It reminds me a bit of John Woo films like Face
Off and Hard Boiled (not MI2, it was crap.) And obviously the Matrix, but I
don't need to remind you of that.
Lastability: **
The only major problem I have with Max Payne, it that it's just too short. The levels out there are great. The extra levels and mods are great- but I'm only judging by what comes with the game. If only the game was a bit longer, I could have given it a really high final mark and listed it within my top games ever. It's a bit like eating a big bag of sweets, you always reach the end sooner than you would have liked.
Overall:
Undoubtably
a great game, but it's just not long enough to be considered one of the best
games ever.
